The essentials

What is an Australian eVisitor?

The eVisitor (subclass 651) is a temporary visa for eligible European passport holders. It lets you visit Australia as often as you wish during a 12-month period, with stays of up to 3 months after each arrival.

Before you apply: you must be outside Australia both when you submit your application and when a decision is made. Australian citizens cannot apply.

What you can do

One visa, several ways to visit

Your visit must be temporary and you must follow all visa conditions and Australian laws.

Tourism & holidays

Explore Australia, take a cruise, or enjoy a holiday.

Visit family & friends

Make short visits to people you know in Australia.

Business visitor activities

Attend meetings, conferences, trade fairs, or negotiate contracts.

Short study or training

Study or train for up to 3 months in certain circumstances.

Business visits are limited

You may make business enquiries, negotiate or review contracts, join an official government visit, or attend a conference or trade fair. You cannot work for an Australian organisation or sell goods or services directly to the public.

Check your passport

Eligibility depends on the passport you hold. You must also meet health and character requirements, be a genuine visitor, and have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government.

Important conditions

Know before you go

The eVisitor is flexible, but it is not a work visa and it cannot be extended.

Health insurance is strongly recommended

You are personally responsible for healthcare costs in Australia. Suitable insurance can reduce unexpected financial risk.

  • Cruises

You need a visa if you enter Australia during a cruise. A round-trip cruise may count as time in Australia and does not reset your stay.

  • Separate family applications

Each family member needs an individual application, including children and people listed on another person’s passport.

  • No paid work

The eVisitor does not permit paid work for an Australian employer. You need an appropriate work visa.

  • No extension

You cannot extend this visa. To remain longer, apply for another suitable visa before your current stay ends.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an eVisitor valid?+

It is generally valid for travel for 12 months from the grant date. You can enter Australia multiple times and stay for up to 3 months after each entry.

Is the Australian eVisitor free?+

Yes. The Australian Government does not charge an application fee for the eVisitor (subclass 651). Optional private assistance may carry a separate service fee.

Can I work in Australia on an eVisitor?+

No. You may undertake limited business visitor activities, but you cannot work for or provide services to an Australian business, or sell directly to the public.

Can my family apply together?+

Family members cannot be included in one application. Every traveller must submit a separate application, including children and anyone listed on a parent’s passport.

Can I extend my eVisitor?+

You cannot extend an eVisitor. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for another visa that suits your circumstances.

Do I need a visa for an Australian cruise?+

Yes, if you enter Australia during the cruise. On a round-trip cruise, time at sea may still count as time in Australia and does not reset your permitted stay.
